THE SOUL CARE TRADITION OF GAZING INTO SACRED ART

The video above is the conclusion of a 2-hour tour by William Henry, showing how spiritual traditions all used images to connect to our divine nature. In Henry’s closing words: “We can enter into the divine realm through the image.”

What I will focus on is entering into the image. Tradition focuses on the god or goddess entering an image or form, consecrated to prepare it to house divine energy. In my understanding, the opposite technique, of the viewer doing the entering, was taught in Mystery schools, in shamanic journeying, and was used by Jung as Active Imagination. It can even be explained another way. We all have guides and our Soul. These usually remain out of reach. But when we seek a way to connect, they will honor our seeking by occupying the form that attracts us. Thus, we can connect with our own unconscious, or go beyond into the super-conscious. What results are symbols made numinous (transcendent) by a higher Presence we can interact with but do not control.

These can be statues of saints, for instance, a mythic creature like Pegasus, a dream image, a Tarot card, a guru. Hardly matters, for it is some archetype within that, being unconscious, gets projected. At least till re-owned.

A skeptic looks at a crucifix, sees superstition or perhaps fine handiwork. But the mother praying for a fevered child has leapt past into connection to what she is projecting, and it leads to an inner change in her, and many times, in who she is praying for. Two people view a gun, one sees metal workmanship, or simply shrugs, another feels it as power. Again, projection making a form a"sacred" symbol, tho, as always, the true power hides within.

Pondering how to clarify this with a personal example, I begin with breathwork to center, ask protection, and am led to elevate my palms. I soon see, in mind’s eye, a cathedral in the distance... I invite more by asking "And?"

Giant image of a Renaissance-type robed God hovers above the cathedral. Hear:

He is in you now as the Spirit of God, a mere image if only invoked from a low frequency. But elevated, thru worship and intent, an infusion takes place, as with the communion wafer when elevated.

Seeing priest in green chasuble raising the host during Mass. The huge spirit above shrinks into it, then attendees at communion rail are being served the consecrated wafers. And?

Now I can be dispersed among the faithful in attendance. This is the magic formula then. Invoke one’s highest, and it will respond to your summons. But now, internally, whatever is of the faith-less will also arise to create interference, and that is the essence of entering the image and engaging. One’s intent is sacred, but one’s initial encounters may be only of the shadow realm. Bear in mind that behind these engagements tho, is the hovering Sacred, like a puppet master, directing all. Seeing this red-robed gray-haired God moving puppets on long strings.  And?

So the communion scene, or its elevated state, can be interfered with?

I start seeing vandals entering the church to attack the votive spots at sides and rear. Even as communion is being served, lightning and thunder erupt from above. And?

Thunder and vandals, what are you?

One vandal looks up towards me, as at camera… We are the rebellious in each, sent here by the dark forces to produce chaos and disrupt inner silence, the divine peace which must exist for the communion state to flow. We are inherited just by you being born. We serve Chaos, out of which, by mutual agreement among the rival gods, will rise the evolved state more and more, of your God essence.

The God figure now hovers over small vandal figures, not clear yet what is happening below… Now He’s holding a few up, who are really pencil sketches on white paper, not real as He is. And?

All such figures are part of the illusion, hence not colored in as with the communion scene. Once invoked, the process has a built-in fail-safe, as does life itself. Invoke the Almighty in either case, living, or journeying within to purify, and all must end happily.

I bow, grateful for the flow, and close.

For Jung, the God archetype is the soul's whole-making function that says to us: “Become who you are. Become all that you are.” The above example, spontaneous, is mild, but I let it stand.  Other experiences over the decades, more dramatic and even shattering, are still too personal to share.  Next will be tips and examples using imagination to journey as creator.
